According to ARCS model website The ARCS model is a problem solving approach to designing the motivational aspects of learning environments to stimulate and sustain students’ motivation to learn (Keller, 1983, 1984, 1987). There are two major parts to the model. The first is a set of categories representing the components of motivation. These categories are the result of a synthesis of the research on human motivation. The second part of the model is a systematic design process that assists you in creating motivational enhancements that are appropriate for a given set of learners. We have recently been told that we need to maintain a data wall in one of the rooms at school and each grade level had a representative. I was the first grade representative and no one including the principal knew what was expected. Many of the teachers don’t like this idea. Since I have been taking Walden classes they asked how they can convey the data. I showed them several websites to use to create graphs and how to do it. I also showed them how to use excel. One teacher was reluctant to do the data wall I could not understand why. She was the principal of the school for a year and felt it was another way for administration to keep eyes on the teachers. I had shared with them some websites and samples so that they understood it is about driving instruction not about finger pointing.
1. They didn’t want to do the data walls because they didn’t know how to create the graphs.
2. They felt apprehensive because administration was dictating the data wall it was just another micro managing stunt as one said.
Using Keller’s ARCS model I could found out the motivation behind the reluctance to understand their dilemma. Building confidence in the use of technology will ensure success for all involved. Having knowledge of ARCS method when trying to get buy in would be like having Robert’s Rule of Order for running meetings and conferences.

Finish each day and be done with it. Your have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenly and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with you old nonense.

Wow it’s funny that the principal took a negative approach to that situation. Leadership is driven from the top down, but it seems like in your situation it’s the other way around. I do feel that administration should have provided the same explanation that you did; therefore she could have come into the situation with a positive attitude and rallied the rest of the teachers that thought the idea was negative. Great information!!!
