NEW YEARS QUOTE:

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Finish each day and be done with it. Your have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenly and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with you old nonense.

Module 1 Blog Post

What are your beliefs about how people learn best? What is the purpose of learning theory in educational technology?

I believe that people learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. I believe that they take ownership of their learning and thus want to be successful. When a student takes control of their learning they are more apt to try new things. I believe that the more students are involved in discussion and learning the more they retain. Recently I have started using peer tutoring more than ever before with my students that haven’t mastered kindergarten skills. I have found that they are more willing to work in a small group with peers than with me. I have also learned that they pay more attention to their peers than to me. I guess they feel more comfortable with them because they don’t grade them. I am concerned because of new special education laws and systems told to keep their special education numbers low more students are falling through the cracks than ever before. Students learn in a variety of ways and the only way to ensure that every student’s in your class is learning is to teach in a variety of different ways, auditory, visual and kinestic. Through all my years in education and professional development we have been taught to teach by what research says using hands-on activities, small group discussions (centers), whole group, peer tutoring, simulations, charts, videos, podcasts, video casts, and illustrations among numerous other things to actively engage the learner regardless of their learning style. The purpose of learning theory in educational technology is to guide our instruction in the classroom. Learning theory in educational technology is a tool to aid the teachers in doing a better job at meeting the needs of their students. With changes in special education assessment and less and less students qualifying more than ever before teachers are being forced to look at new ways to reach the diverse students that they have in the classroom and using educational technology is the way to do it. We in the USA are behind in many areas of education and I believe it is because we teach only one way and our students learn a variety of different ways and in this technological driven world we are far behind because often we don’t utilize the technology that we have available to do a better job.

According to Driscoll(2005),we must plan instruction for two types of learning: the acquisition of knowledge and the experiences of learning by doing.

Accroding to Siemens(2008), The role of the ediucator and the process of instruction has changed due to pressure from educational stakeholders. Educators are seen as a "master artist observing the activities of students." Siemens(2008)states, A "network administrator assisting students in forming connections and creating their learning networks." Siemens(2008)states," a concierge directing learners to resources or learning opportunities that they may not be aware of." Siemens(2008)states, "a curator with expertise with advanced knowledge of a domain and guides and encourages learner ecploration."

  1. Lynne,
You did a great job and gave a good look at how a teacher views learning. How would you motivate the students who are not invested in their learning to become actively involved?
I agree 100% about the U.S. being behind in education, as a teacher, what if anything do you think needs to happen with education today to turn that around?
    Thanks!

  2. Hi Lynne,
I really liked your quote from Driscoll (2005) that "we must plan instruction for two types of learning: the acquisition of knowledge and the experiences of learning by doing." I believe this is a very important thing for educator to remember especially when creating learning materials and choosing what technology to use in order to facilitate learning.

Also, your statement about U.S. being behind because we teach only one way rather than adjusting variety of learning style among students. I personally believe even cultural difference would affect how students learn. In Japan, majority of learning in grade school focuses on acquiring and memorizing knowledge rather than critical thinking skills. I wonder, what would be a best way for us, educators to assess different learning styles among students and understand the cause of that difference. Do you have any experience in the past observing cultural differences affecting students' learning style?

  3. I agree that when a student takes control of their learning they are more apt to try new things, but I also think that the best learning takes place when the subject in something that interest the learner. Seeing that I personally am a individual learner, I find group work a bit challenging. It’s funny that you mention that the students feel more comfortable with their peers instead of you. I am not sure about you, but when I was in high school the last people I would feel comfortable with when it came down to actually learning something was my peers.

  4. Jeannine,

Thank you for your post! I try and make learning fun and challenge the students to get involved. One of the things that has greatly helped this year is the addition of the smartboard ALL my students sit waiting for their turn to interact with it. It appears that we are behind in math and science so I would like to see us involve more business men and women that use math and science on a daily basis. These would be the driven ones in the field and I believe they could help turn things around. What's your thought?

  5. Mayumi,

Thank you for your post! I have only been teaching for 8 years and started at 45. My experience has been very little with the cultural
difference. I teach in a low income are which is 98% white and the rest is a mixture. When I taught 8th grade I taught all students at our school and had some cutural differences. It was exciting to me to see how each learned and I used it to my advantage as these students were great leaders and great with peer tutoring. It was clear to me that their learning styes were different and thus could help teach others with the same learning style. Most teachers still have a problem with peer tutoring. I have been very successful with mine.

  6. Andree,

Thank you for your post! In high school I felt uncomfortable with some of my peers but not all. Being 53 years old organized peer tutoring wasn't being done when I was in school. We would get together with friends and work on homework together with music going. Boy have things changed!
